Life Transitions

Only to the extent that we expose ourselves over and over to annihilation
can that which is indestructible in us be found.

– Pema Chödrön, Buddhist teacher, author, nun

The uncertainty is gnawing at me.

I don’t know who I am anymore.

I question my purpose, how I got where I am, where I’m supposed to go.

I feel discombobulated. It’s hard to envision the future.

I thought I had figured out how life was going to be. Why am I here??

The rug has been pulled out from under me. I’m scrambling to get back on solid ground. I want to feel secure and stable.

The ‘shoulds’ are attacking hard.

Should I leave this relationship? Change my career? Go back to school? Move? I should have figured this out sooner. I should know better.

Choosing the “right” option is all-consuming.

I’m irritable. Disheartened. I feel like I have nothing to offer.

I feel hopeless, sad, and lost. I want to get in bed and pull the covers over my head – this isn’t like me.

What if I won’t ever be happy? What if I’m incapable?

Regret and Lost Time

I thought I had everything figured out.

I did all the things I was supposed to do – education, relationship, career, children.

So why isn’t it enough? Why am I here – in this desperate place? It feels like I don’t know myself at all.

And it’s too late to start over. I’m stuck with this marriage, job, life – I might as well figure out a way to be happy with it.

That feels impossible.

Sometimes we choose change. Sometimes it chooses us.

Change is scary; that’s why a lot of us stay stuck. Inside the scariness of change is an opportunity to uncover your true potential – a chance to be happier.

We’ve been sold some hooey about how life is “supposed” to go, which sets us up to feel like failures when our lives don’t look this way. But we don’t have to believe it!!
